Really pleased with how this one turned out.

The red faced Warbler is a small songbird of the Mexican mountains and is found in high elevation forest of Arizona and New Mexico in the US. It measures around 14 cm in lengh and weighs between 8 - 11 grams.

I few weeks ago I painted an aceo of just this birds lovely head but I also wanted to paint the full bird.  I wanted a square format but the 6 x 6 and 8 x 8 panels were a just a bit small.  So in the end I decided to paint it on unstretched canvas which can then be rolled and posted in a mail tube thereby keeping postage costs down. 

I am really pleased with the painting and enjoyed painting on larger scale so I think will be doing a few more larger format paintings. 

American Kestrel measures 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 inches) and is painted on loose unstretched  Fredrix Watercolour canvas.

I  used the same reference photo as I used for "Spring Forest" - I just changed the season and the trees.

I  really enjoy  painting the forest scenes as I can use a lot  of artistic license and it is just what I need when I need a break from detail.  I have also painted a bluebell and autumn scene using the same reference photo  - the only part of the scene that is consist is the position of the path as I changed the number and placement of trees.  It is rather fun painting three different versions of the same scene. I will blog the bluebell and autumn paintings next week - just need them to cure before varnishing them.

I love the colours of this one.  For the tail feathers, I  did a few glazes.  I used white first to indicate the feathers and then went over with a glaze and then repeated until it looked right.

This one was a fun one to paint - everything just seemed to work.  I have been trying out a no 6 designer pointed brush (my no 4 one  has lost it's point a bit).  I thought it would be a bit to big for the finer details but the tip comes to a nice point so works fine.

I felt like painting a few little landscape paintings. This is the first one I did.  Rather pleased with how it turned out.  It looks nothing like the reference photo.  I tend to use the reference photo's more for the placement of the path and the occasional tree but that's about it.
